CMYK Embroidery

Evelin Kasikov has done this CMYK embroidery which I have just com across, it is doing something different with colour and print, she writes on her website...

'The idea of handmade print started as an academic project. Now, most of my work is based on that. I have created CMYK embroidered illustrations for clients such as The Guardian and WIRED, as well as worked on numerous private commissions.
I use conventional screen angles: Cyan 105˚, Magenta 75˚, Yellow 90˚ and Black 45˚ and prepare dot screens for cross-stitch. Works are stitched using cotton threads in CMYK colours, the intensity of colour depends on the number of strands used. The final outcome is a printed page created by hand.'

Tour de France Infographic Poster

Infographics about the Tour de France, printed with offset in CMYK. Again very useful for my project, a design containing a map aswell as infographics. It holds a lot of information but is designed a laid out well so it doesn't look to cluttered and confusing.

Henry + Co.

A design fro Henry + Co, using lots of print methods, offset, foil stamping, embossing and die cut. The website these designs were found on is For Print Only, they give you a lot of information about the design, how its printed, how long it took, stock, colour. Its really useful to see how these designs are produced.

Deutsche & Japaner

This is a beautiful notebook design by Deutsche & Japan, it was designed for Impremerie Du Marais Paris. It shows a few different printing techniques but still remains simple and elegent, it has been
embossed, hot foiled, sewn, varnished, silk screened and included 2 Pantones.

Metropolitan World Atlas

This is a very relevant design by Joost Groot, it documents 101 cities in the world showing maps and statistics about each one, the book is printed in five colors, including metallic blue, dayglo orange, and a tinted varnish. I think this is something I could produce for my project in the future.

For Print Only

I have just come across this website which I wish I foudn earlier! It is all about design for print, which is the module we are looking at now. I has a great list of books to look at which are relevant, definitly putting some of these on my christmas list!

I am going to have a look in the library for some of these books, its a bit late in the day now but they will still be helpful for future work.

Ketch Brand Identity

I have just come across this brand identity for Ketch, which is a clothing brand. It fits in well with my project as it uses nautical imagery such as a the anchor and the rope like string. It is also a very simple yet beautiful design, with embossing and debossing and the monochrome colours.

You Are Here

You Are Here is a book of all different maps, from the past to the present day, I have manly focused on the maps that are to do with land and sea as that is what my map is going to show. After looking at these maps I need to consider how I am going to scale my map and if I am going to have cordinates and what colour scheme I am going to use.

Shipping Forecast-Products

Books

'Peter Jefferson presented the Shipping Forecast for over 40 years, and his familiar voice continues to be heard reading quotations on Radio 4's "Quote/Unquote". This book is both an affectionate memoir and an account of the science behind the forecast: Peter explains how it came about, who collects all the information and what it's like to read this bulletin. Even though the information in the forecast is now readily available in many formats, the Shipping Forecast is something of a must listenA" for fans gathered over the decades. For reasons not quite understood, it has become a much-loved part of the British cultural landscape with an avid following of listeners who find its poetry is the perfect cure for insomnia.'

'In Attention All Shipping, Charlie Connelly looks at the Shipping Forecast, which, regularly broadcast on BBC radio, is for many a familiar and reassuring element of the British cultural landscape. Its content could spell the difference between life and death for seafarers, but arguably less so for audiences in the garden shed or suburban living room. Here the author wittily sheds some light on the places behind the names, and their historical and odd cultural associations. The weather gets a mention here and there too.'

 Maps
'Bring the famous Radio 4 bulletins to life with this decorative flat map of the shipping forecast areas. The Shipping Forecast is produced by the UK Meteorological society and describes the weather reports and forecasts around the British Isles. In this mock-antique style map the areas are clearly marked and include famous areas like Fisher, Forties and Fastnet. Displayed on a wall, it could easily serve as a practical guide. The map is mounted on card and is illustrated with decorative ships and fishes. The ideal gift for those addicted to the 4 times daily broadcasts or even those just attracted by one of the most idiosyncratic British traditions!'

A map for fans of the BBC Shipping Forecast, showing where the sea areas are around Britain and Ireland. The map also extends out into the Atlantic, including some mysterious sea areas not mentioned on the radio! A must for those late night broadcasts, as the strains of "Sailing By" come across the airwaves.

Top Ten Manual-No.9 Finishing

Embossing
Embossing refers to the creation of an impression of some kind of design, decoration, lettering or pattern on another surface like paper, cloth, metal and even leather, to make a relief. In regular printing or an engraving, plates are pressed against the surface to leave an imprint. In embossing however, the pressing raises the surfaces adding a new dimension to the object.

Die Cutting
Metal, paper, or other material shaping process in which a metal die with sharp edges is pressed into the material to cut it.

Foiling
