I have a set of Ladybird book covers, I have found some that have some relevance to the theme of my brief, but I am mainly focusing on the style of the covers . It is a style that I want to look at for my designs, old fashion illustrations.
Noriko Okaku makes really quirky moving image and animation, this is his showreel from 2009, just highlighting some of the stuff he has done. I really like he surreal feelings his work has and is something I would want to look at in the future.
'FOX CLASSICS showcases classic films, and the ID series was designed to take viewers on a guessing game journey through the world of classic cinema. Each spot sticks to the channel brand with the aim of guiding the channel into a new phase of sophistication.' These are lovely moving image videos, the designs are simple and clean and the movements from shot to short work really well, they are smooth and cleverly done.
I have looked at some vinyl sleeves and documented the ones that I think have relevance to what I want to do with my CD packing.
Panda Bear The text on this sleeve has the same sort of cut out feel I want to go for on my packaging, its clear and concise on the outside with illustrations on the inside.
Joy Division With this sleeve I really like the material its made out of, it gives it a more special edge, again very simple but made well.
The Maccabees I've blogged these before so spoken about them already but here I got my hands on them and go to see how they are made and also what they look like when opened up.
The Beasties Boys With this one I like how the inside record works with the sleeve, matching the orange circle on the inside with the one on the sleeve.
I have looked at some of the CD I own, mainly the card/paper ones as they are more in keeping with what I will be making. I have looked at the different ways they are made, where the CD is inserted, how they open etc, to get some inspiration for my own CD cover.
The XX have a strong identity, their album cover was a simple white X on a white background, it is strong and recognisable. They took this imagery and for each of their singles changed it each time,
They changed the background of the cross for each of their singles, this is an idea I want to take into my own work, I am going to work with cut outs and background imagery, it is possible that I make 10 different inner sleeves, each one with a different pattern.
As we have to design a CD sleeve for our disks for submission I had a look at already existing ones which were inline with the idea I want to go with for mine.
The Maccabees singles sleeves look at cut out text with a patterned/textured background.
This is something I looked at in my animations and is an idea I thought I could carry through into
my CD case.
I have also looked at Merriweather Post Pavilion by Animal Collective, there album cover is an entire patterns which incases the CD, its also an optical illusion, seeming to move as you look at it.
This is a title sequence for the film Thank you for Smoking, it is made up of the credits all written on vintage cigarette packaging, and the song is relevant to the imagery.
This is a great opening to a film, it shows the feel of the film, it keeps that sense of suspense and horror right from the start. It also looks like part it of it was made using After Effects.
Opening credits to Superbad, so simple yet works so well, it all comes together,
the music, graphics, colours all work as one and set a tone and feel for the
movie, and very entertaining.
More 4 have had a re-brand for 2012, this is their new logo/ident, its simple but works, everyone knows channels 4s identity so they just played on that. I am a fan.
This is a BBC2 ident from christmas time 2007, the main sequence is far more complex from what I could achieve on After Effects however the end scene is something I can take influence from, the artwork is layered, you can see the background through the cut out 2 icon which is what I am doing with my text and patterns.
This is the title sequence of Enter The Void by Gaspard Noe, it it really impressive in my eyes, its simple flashing and use of typefaces but its just so effective.
I have taken screen shots from 'How to Cook like Heston' I like how the words appear around the objects, this is an aspect I wanted to look at in my title sequence, with the facts about the patterns appearing around the names of the patterns.
On my crit feedback Will suggested I look at this artist, she does a lot with collage and layering as well as looking at lot at bright colour which fits in well with what I am doing. http://www.lkperrella.com/
These are a few examples pf her work that i was drawn too, she even looks at patterns in some pieces, her work is a lot more complex than my ideas but she looks at layering and textures within her work which is something I am working with and devloping at the moment so I will take some inspiration from this work.
I have been thinking about my target audience and I have decided I want to aim my programme at adults, in perticular designers. I think Sky Arts is the most approriate channel to air the show and I have looked at some of the other programmes that are shown on the channel that would probably fall in the same category as my programme on Patterns.
Another Saul Bass inspired title sequece here for television show Dexter, also sitcky to the simplicity and the three main colours of red, white and black. Its not the orginal title sequnce for the programme but one that has been designed as an alternative, I think it works reall well.
This is the title sequence for the television programme Mad Men, you can see the influence of Saul Bass in the work and it keeps the simplicity and works with three main colours, red, white and black.
Another possible audience/channel my programme on patterns could be shown on is Sky Arts, they show programmes to do with all the arts and have a art and design category. Here are some of their idents.
This ident for Sky Arts uses a lot of shape and pattern in it which fits well with my subject and feel approriate for the research I have gathered.
A possible audience to aim my pattern programme at might be children as a learning programme, I have been in the CBeebies website and they already have some exsisting material to do with patterns, learning and malking.
Here are some already exsisting CBeebies idents, the focus on shape and colour, appealing to the younger audience.
