Hand Job

Here are just a few pieces of work from 'Hand Job' by Michael Perry, my opposites are Simple and Ornate so I tried to find typography the shows both of these opposites. Some of the type is very simple just using basic lines and block colour, in contrast some of the type is very detailed using image within it or around it and using ornate patterns and shapes.

Apples

I came across this Illustrator Angus McCrum and found this post on his blog, he thought that the typeface used on apples didn't match their taste so he tried to match up each apple to the typeface he thought would suit their flavour. I liked the idea of linking something like taste to typography and how we are able to classify so many things by the typeface used to represent it and how the wrong typeface can changed the meaning of something instantly.

Just My Type

I am currently reading this book, 'Just my Type, by Simon Garfield (pretty good timing with our current brief), its a book of stories about different typefaces, discussing the best and worst typefaces that are around and what people think about them, I'll keep updating on how its going.

Michael Perry

This is an article on Michael Perry from Issue 1 of Elephant Magazine, Winter 09-10, he is described as a 'doer', which fits perfectly to our brief title 'Design is About Doing', he is the designer behind one of my favourite typography books, 'Hand Job'.

HOW

The brief we have been set is by HOW for a typography book they are bringing out next year so I thought I would look at some of their previous publications for some inspiration and to see what they are all about.

Graphic Design for Screen

This is 'Infinite Sclupture' by designer Universal Everything, it was part of the Decode exhibition which was at the V&A, it was a great exhibition and this is just once piece that featured in it. I love how it just keeps spinning and changing and your eyes constantly see something new. http://universaleverything.com/

Graphic Design for Screen

This is 'idaft', it can be found here http://dothedaft.com/, it is an interactive piece of graphic design for screen, you can use your keyboard to make the iconic sounds from Daft Punk songs and they have the backing track so you can play along, I think it's a very clever and interesting piece of design and I think interactive design is great concept as it engages people in a way other design may not.

Graphic Design for Screen

Seeing as it's valentines day I thought this was a good day to post this, people declaring their love in comparison to something else, obviously some graphic designers on there, I Love you more than Helvetica, that's a lot of love!

Graphic Design for Screen

This is a very clever and very fun website, people give money which is donated to Oxfam and then you get your name printed on a piece of toast, that toast then acts as a link to your website, promoting yourself whilst doing something good for society, lovely!

Graphic Design for Screen

I came across this website, http://www.lovelyasatree.com/, it's a website which informs you on how to be a environmentally aware graphic designer, I think it's a really good idea as people should be more aware of the environment and the damage that can be done when people are careless.
